The Trip You’ve Been Meaning to Take, Designed the Way It Deserves to Be
Whether it’s a milestone anniversary, a multigenerational reunion, or the journey you’ve talked about for years: here’s how the process works.
What a Travel Architect Actually Does
The best homes aren’t assembled from a catalog. They’re designed around how you actually live, what you actually love, and the details you’d never think to specify until someone who’s built a hundred of them asked the right question. Trips at this level work the same way.
By the time most of our clients reach out, they’ve already tried planning it themselves: twenty browser tabs, conflicting reviews, and the quiet realization that even after weeks of research, they still aren’t sure they’re making the right call. That’s not a failure of effort. It’s the natural limit of doing your own research in a category where the difference between a good decision and a great one is often invisible from the outside.
A Travel Architect is the professional you hire when the trip matters too much to leave to an algorithm. We bring the expertise, attention to detail, and client-focused approach of a custom home architect to the journey itself. Every property, every guide, every transition is chosen for you specifically, drawing on firsthand experience and relationships that booking sites don’t have access to. The result is a trip that feels inevitable in hindsight, as if it could only have been designed one way: yours.
“Our job is to seamlessly create the extraordinary while solving challenges you didn’t even know you had.”
Here’s What Your Experience Looks Like:
This is what it means to have a Travel Architect.

Why It Matters To You
It might seem obvious — but it isn’t. Most travel planners work from marketing decks and supplier reports. We work from experience. Every hotel we recommend, we’ve walked through. Every guide we book, we’ve met. Every itinerary we design draws on what we’ve learned firsthand about how a place actually works, at ground level, in real weather, with real timing. Here’s what that means for you.
This is what firsthand experience actually looks like on the page.
How It Works
Every step exists for a reason. Together, they’re what makes the difference between a trip that was planned and one that was designed.
01.
Everything starts with a conversation, but before we have it, we want to make it count. A short inquiry form lets us come prepared with the right questions instead of the basic ones. By the time we're on the phone together, we're already past "where are you thinking?" and into the details that actually matter.
02.
After our consultation call, you'll receive a written summary of everything we discussed, including things that came up beyond the form. If our approach feels right, we'll send an invoice for the design work. If it doesn't, there's no pressure and no cost. You decide from a position of clarity, not obligation.
03.
This is where the trip actually gets designed. Face-to-face, we go deep: how you actually like to travel, what you want to spend your energy on, where the money makes the biggest difference. It's the conversation that separates a trip that looks like you from a trip that feels like you.
04.
You'll see a draft of the itinerary and tell us what needs to change. Because of how thorough the design call is, that usually means one or two adjustments, not a dozen. Once it's right, you approve it, and we lock in every component so nothing shifts underneath you.
05.
In the weeks before you leave, we handle the mental load of preparation. Packing guidance, pre-trip briefings, and real-time updates on anything happening at your destination that might affect the trip. You stop planning and start looking forward to it.
06.
You're never traveling alone. We and our in-destination partners are available throughout your trip: through our app, by text, by phone. If a flight shifts, we handle it. If something unexpected comes up that we should build into the day, we handle that too. You get to focus on the experience, not the logistics.
07.
When you're home, we sit down together, in person or by phone, to hear how it went. What worked, what didn't, what surprised you. That's what makes the next trip better than the last. This isn't a transaction. It's the beginning of an ongoing relationship.
Timelines and engagement costs are specific to each trip. We’ll discuss both in detail during your consultation call.
“Working with both Anne and Aaron was a complete joy. As neophytes to the foreign travel experience, we appreciated their knowledge, creative suggestions, practical advice and patience. They walked us through the planning process, crafted itineraries and unique lodging choices tailored to our somewhat quirky vision, and handled all the details from start to finish. They were always available to answer questions and concerns, checked in periodically during our trip to make sure things were going smoothly, and even found local contacts for us should we encounter issues while on our journey. Anne and Aaron crafted a topnotch experience for us and we'll definitely work with them again!”
“Anne booked a vacation to Maui for my family... the whole process took no time and was exactly what we wanted. After our initial discussion Anne provided a few great options that were right in our price range. She also provided other options that we never thought of. Once we selected an option, everything was booked and it was easy. The trip was AMAZING! The hotel was incredible and all the excursions we took were so much fun. It was so nice to have someone do all the details; if I had done this by myself it would have taken weeks and would not have been as nice. Thank you Anne for giving my family such a memorable, stress free vacation.”
“I wanted something extraordinary for my daughter's senior trip. As a busy professional, I knew I didn't have the time to do the research so I called Anne. She built a beautiful itinerary, thought of everything and sent it to me. Both of us experienced so many instagrammable moments, from Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos to monasteries in Meteora, bungy jumping off the bridge in Corinth, and the Acropolis, all while having an unbelievable time together, precisely what we needed before she heads off to college. Can't thank you enough and can't wait until our next trip. I highly recommend!”
A luxury travel advisor designs custom trips for discerning travelers: handling the research, itinerary design, property and guide selection, booking coordination, and in-destination support that make high-value trips work seamlessly. Where booking sites match travelers to inventory, a luxury advisor matches the trip to the traveler. Most modern luxury advisors also maintain industry relationships that provide access to VIP perks, upgrades, and experiences not available through public channels. At I Know Places Travel, we call this design-first approach the Travel Architect model.
A travel agent primarily handles transactions: booking flights, hotels, and packaged trips. A travel advisor takes a strategic role: understanding your goals, designing a custom itinerary, coordinating vendors, and providing support throughout the trip. Most modern professionals in the industry are advisors rather than agents, and industry data from ASTA shows advisors handle roughly 59% of cruise bookings and 75% of tour packages. At I Know Places Travel, we take the advisor role a step further with the Travel Architect approach, building each itinerary around who you are rather than what's already available.
Luxury travel advisor planning fees typically range from $250 to $2,000 or more for custom international itineraries, depending on complexity. These fees are separate from the cost of the trip itself and cover the advisor's design, coordination, and support work. At I Know Places Travel, our clients typically invest a minimum of $500 per person per day for their trip, excluding airfare, a reflection of our commitment to working exclusively with 4- and 5-star properties and vetted service providers. The Engagement Fee is quoted based on trip complexity and discussed during your consultation call.
For high-value or complex trips, hiring a travel advisor is often worth it, especially when the trip involves multiple destinations, significant investment, or personal milestones. Industry research from Virtuoso found that 75% of luxury travelers cite safety and security as leading concerns, and 65% consider an added layer of protection a top benefit of using an advisor. Beyond logistics, a Travel Architect at I Know Places Travel provides expertise, industry access, and problem-solving support that most travelers can't easily replicate on their own.
Travel advisors typically follow a structured planning process that starts with a consultation call, moves through custom itinerary design, and continues through in-destination support during the trip. Most advisors charge a planning fee for the design work and earn commission from suppliers on bookings. At I Know Places Travel, our seven-step process spans discovery, engagement, design, approval, preparation, travel, and post-trip review, typically taking three to six months from initial consultation to departure for custom international trips.
Yes. Most luxury travel advisors provide in-destination support throughout your trip, including help with flight delays, hotel issues, medical emergencies, and unexpected itinerary changes. Real-time support is one of the primary reasons travelers hire advisors for complex or high-value trips. At I Know Places Travel, we and our in-destination partners are available by phone, text, and app throughout your journey, so when something unexpected happens, someone who already knows your itinerary is on the other end within minutes.
